Hi High Vibe Yogis,

Check out the below where I give you some amazing pointers and tips that have helped me to REALLY see the benefits of meditating. Hopefully you can incorporate these tips into your meditation practice to help you get in the “OM ZONE” and receive the many benefits meditation can give us!

  1. Don’t get Discouraged– Meditation is a mental shower and a cleaning out of the mind. We have so many thoughts stored in our subconscious and unconscious minds so if you have a lot you need to clean you, it can become “messy” before it gets really clean. After you have released a lot of those thoughts, experiences, traumas, limiting ideas, etc, that is when your mind chatter becomes quieter and it gets easier. Just like anything it takes practice to see the benefits….which leads me to tip #2!
  2. Be Consistent- Commit to choose a meditation that suits your goals and/or inspires you, and commit to practicing it over 40, 90, 120, or 1,000 days. 40 days: Change a habit. 90 days: Confirm the habit. 120 days: You are the new habit. 1,000 days: Mastery of the new habit. Commit to practicing every day even if it is for only 3 minutes and you will start to notice changes in the way you think and feel. Try to be consistent with the time and place you meditate so you find something that works best for your schedule and something that fits into your lifestyle.
  3. Eliminate Distractions- Make sure to create a space where you won’t be bothered or distracted so that you can get the full benefits. Sit on a natural surface or yoga mat and use a meditation pillow or blanket or whatever makes you most comfortable. Put your phone on silent, wear comfortable clothes, and eliminate any other noises. Tune in and set an intention so that you have a goal in mind you won’t be distracted from. Focus on your breath if your mind starts to wander and try not to allow your mind to think about any given thought for too long. Allow thoughts to come into your mind, and then release them and use your breath to help with this and to keep you present.
  4. Timing- The best time of day is in the morning when your mind is most calm and the energy of the day is creating so if you can do it first thing when you wake up that is recommended! If not figure out the best time of day that works for you and try to stick with that same time every day. Maybe its before you go to bed or at lunch time- make this something that can fit into your lifestyle for the long haul!
  5. Take Baby Steps- Start out with 3 or 11 minutes and just start to understand what meditation feels like and make it a part of your routine. I see people jumping into 20-30 minute practices and then it doesn’t last long because they jumped in too deep…baby steps people!

Here are some other additional tools to really get in to meditating that Yogi Bhajan suggested from 3HO.org:

Meditation Guidelines:

Tune-in with the Adi Mantra

Chant “Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo” three times before beginning the meditation. You can also choose to do a yoga kriya or some warm-ups after tuning in. You can check out my video here with how to tune in and this video with great warm ups to do before meditation.

Meditation Minutes

Yogic science says that there are specific lengths of time needed for certain desired effects in meditation. Thus, meditations (and exercises in a kriya) are held for a specified period of time.

3 minutes: Affects circulation (blood) and electromagnetic field.

11 minutes: Changes glandular system and nerves.

22 minutes: Balances and coordinates the three minds.

31 minutes: Affects all the cells and rhythms of the body and all layers of the mind’s projection.

62 minutes: Changes the gray matter of the brain. Integrates the subconscious “shadow mind” and the outer projection.

2 ½ hours: Holds the new pattern in the subconscious mind by the surrounding universal mind.

Meditation Cycles of Transformation

Committing to a personal practice makes the meditation process of transformation and self-discovery your own. To master the effects of a meditation, practice it as a sadhana, as a daily discipline. This will develop a life-promoting habit. Habit controls us so much that it is said that we can actually change our destiny by changing our habits. We can use various cycles of the human mind to help replace unwanted patterns of behavior with new, more positive ones.
